Chivas USA picks up Jhon Kennedy Hurtado in trade with Chicago

The center back is headed to LA in exchange for allocation money.

A Major League Soccer veteran is changing teams as clubs continue to rework their rosters prior to the impending roster freeze. Jhon Kennedy Hurtado has been sent from the Chicago Fire to Chivas USA in a trade, the clubs announced Friday.

"Jhon is one of the top center backs in MLS. He is athletic, strong, very good in the air, and excellent in one-versus-one situations," Chivas USA coach Wilmer Cabrera said in a news release. "His experience and winning mentality will be a huge addition to our club."

Hurtado was acquired by the Fire via trade prior to the 2014 season and appeared in 19 matches for the Eastern Conference club. The 30-year-old was unable to display the form he did in the previous four seasons with the Seattle Sounders.

In return for Hurtado, the Fire receive allocation money.

“We felt this was a good opportunity to gain additional allocation money that will allow for flexibility moving forward,” Fire coach Frank Yallop said in a news release. “I’d like to thank Jhon for his time here in Chicago this season and wish him well with Chivas USA.”
