NASL Team of the Week: Smits the top goalkeeper after shutout

The FC Edmonton keeper held a clean sheet against San Antonio despite his team playing with 10 men.

The NASL Team of the Week is selected based on performances each weekend and features the best XI players in their respective positions.

John Smits, FC Edmonton – Had several saves to earn a clean sheet against a man-advantaged San Antonio club


Stephen DeRoux, San Antonio Scorpions – Jamaican was solid on Scorpions’ backline to help preserve a shutout

Omar Jarun, Ottawa Fury FC – Palestinian international scored his second goal of the season and was key factor on the backline for Ottawa

Conor Tobin, Carolina RailHawks – Notched his first tally since joining Carolina while helping control the defense

Albert Watson, FC Edmonton – Northern Ireland native had another impressive defensive performance


Tony Donatelli, Ottawa Fury FC – Scored twice for Ottawa’s first road win

Miguel Ibarra, Minnesota United FC – Had a goal and an assist in the victory for Minnesota

Marcos Senna, New York Cosmos – Spaniard once again controlled the midfield, while assisting on the game-winner for New York


Mike Grella, Carolina RailHawks – Created and notched the eventual game-winner to extend Carolina’s home unbeaten streak to 19 matches

Christian Ramirez, Minnesota United FC – Scored his league high fourth goal and added his second assist on the season in the victory against Fort Lauderdale

Mads Stokkelien, New York Cosmos – Norwegian native notched his second goal of the season in the win against Tampa Bay
