MLS Preview: Philadelphia Union - New England Revolution

MLS Preview: Philadelphia Union - New England Revolution

John E. Sokolowski

The Union will look to build off their slump-busting win in Kansas City as they welcome the red-hot Revolution.

The New England Revolution have surged following a slow start to 2014, and perhaps the Philadelphia Union are going down the same road.

After enduring a 1-3-1 start, New England has reeled off a 4-0-1 stretch heading into Saturday's meeting with the Union at PPL Park (7 p.m. ET, MLS Live). While Philadelphia still sits at a disappointing 2-5-5, the Union should carry renewed confidence into the match after notching a 2-1 win at MLS Cup champion Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday.

Danny Cruz and Cristian Maidana scored for the Union, who won despite missing central midfield stalwarts Brian Carroll (groin) and Maurice Edu (concussion symptoms). With Edu now on U.S. national team duty and Carroll a lingering doubt, expect Leo Fernandes and Amobi Okugo to again start in midfield Saturday, with Sheanon Williams occupying Okugo's typical center back slot.

The Revolution, meanwhile, are coming off a 5-0 thrashing of the Seattle Sounders on Sunday. New England's attack of late has been led by the wing play of Diego Fagundez and Teal Bunbury, with rookie Patrick Mullins scoring in back-to-back games as a lone striker.

New England will again be shorthanded defensively, with center back Jose Goncalves (quad) and fullback Kevin Alston (hamstring) still sidelined.
