Reports on Friday revealed the Mexico City side is set to acquire the trio of skilled MLS midfielders.Cruz Azul is ready to make a power move to bring in a trio of skilled MLS midfielders the Mexico City club hopes can help it improve on a disappointing Apertura campaign.
ESPN Deportes first reported the swoop, linking Cruz Azul to Los Angeles Galaxy prospect Jose Villarreal, San Jose Earthquakes defensive midfielder Rafael Baca and Philadelphia Union playmaker Michael Farfan. Sources have confirmed to Goal USA that all three MLS players are in fact on the verge of moves to the Liga MX side.
Villarreal's move to Cruz Azul would be a loan with an option to buy, while sources tell Goal USA that Farfan would be moving to Cruz Azul on a full transfer.
Villarreal's inclusion in the three-player swoop comes as a bit of a surprise considering his status as one of the stars of the U.S. Under-20 national team and one of the most exciting young prospects in MLS. But the Galaxy could give Villarreal some valuable experience before bringing him back after the Liga MX Clausura season, which would be in time to fill in for Landon Donovan, assuming Donovan is a part of the U.S. World Cup team.
Baca is in the final year of his contract with the Earthquakes, and Farfan is in the final year of his deal with the Union.
Cruz Azul added fuel to the speculation by listing all three players on the team's website as incoming players, though deals with the players have yet to be finalized.
One source tells Goal USA that the three MLS teams involved have agreed to the moves, with personal terms for each of the three players still being hammered out.
