The AZ striker, who is seen as the replacement for the recently departed Jozy Altidore, has officially decided to make a one-time switch to the U.S. national team.It appears that AZ Alkmaar has another top American scorer on its roster.
Aron Jóhannsson, a dual national who has eligibility for the United States and Iceland, has filed a one-time switch to become a U.S. international player. Once the move becomes a official, Jóhannsson will no longer be available to play for Iceland.
Jóhannsson made his intentions public on his Facebook page on Monday morning:
"I have decided to make myself eligible for the USA national football team. I was fortunate in that I could choose between playing for Iceland or the USA since I have dual citizenship," he wrote.
"It was neither an easy nor hasty decision, because I was faced with two good national teams. I thank the coaches of Iceland for their interest in me and wish the Iceland national team all the best in the future. Sincerely, Aron Johannsson AZ Alkmaar."
Jóhannsson joined AZ during this January's transfer window and provided cover for U.S. international Jozy Altidore, scoring three goals. Now that Altidore has moved to the Premier League, there are big expectations for the striker who was born in Mobile, Ala. Jóhannsson is highly regarded at the AFAS Stadion and the team's director, former U.S. international Earnie Stewart, hinted that he will be able to provide similar production to Altidore.
"He's good, very good, that's why we have him. He's a typical center forward with good agility," Stewart said of Johannsson to Goal. "He's very cool - I guess all Icelandic players are - and at the same time he has a nose in front of goal.
"He's a player to be reckoned with and if Jozy would leave, we already have a striker that can fill his shoes in the future."
Altidore praised his former teammate for deciding to join the Stars and Stripes on Twitter.
"Happy to hear @aronjo20 is going with USA. Such a quality player, fans and players will love him. Welcome bro. #USMNT," Altidore said from his official account.
