thumbnail Hello,

The 31-year-old has previously captained his country against Trinidad & Tobago in October 2008.

U.S. national team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has named veteran DaMarcus Beasley captain for the upcoming Gold Cup.

“I’m honored to be named captain for the Gold Cup,” said Beasley told U.S. Soccer's official website. “I’m happy to fill in the role for Clint [Dempsey] in the moment and help out any way I can. It’s always a privilege to represent your country, and to do it now as captain will be really special for me.”

Dempsey was named the team's permanent captain last month, but with a mostly second-choice team set to participate in the Gold Cup, Klinsmann has turned to the three-time World Cup veteran.

"He always has a smile and brings a lot of positive energy," Klinsmann said of his new captain. "His leadership and experience will be very valuable in this tournament, and he can help connect some of the younger players to what we have been building.”

Beasley earned his 100th cap in May against Belgium, and has recently enjoyed a resurgence with the national team after a period out of favor. The Puebla man started the recent Hexagonal matches against Jamaica and Panama before being suspended for the team's match against Honduras.

The U.S. kicks off Gold Cup play on July 9 against Belize in Portland.
