Abby Wambach scored four goals in the first half of a friendly against South Korea to set the all-time women's international scoring record at 160.
With a pair of goals in the first 20 minutes, Wambach had drawn level with former teammate Hamm.
After half an hour, Megan Rapinoe laid a corner toward the penalty spot. Wambach bustled forward and directed a powerful header into the top corner of the goal for the world record.
"Congratulations Abby Wambach!" Hamm tweeted. "So proud of you, my friend. You a warrior and true champion. Enjoy it."
Shortly before the hour mark, the 33-year-old came out of the match to a standing ovation in Red Bull Arena. The United States won 5-0.
Wambach is the reigning FIFA World Player of the Year.
