The United States defender has signed a new contract with the Bundesliga club, days after setting a team record for appearances.United States defender Steve Cherundolo has signed a one-year contract extension with Hannover, just six days after setting a club record for Bundesliga appearances.
Cherundolo, the club's captain, will remain with Hannover through the end of next season, the team announced Friday ahead of its final league match of the season against Fortuna Duesseldorf.
Coach Mirko Slomka said the 34-year-old American is "an example of loyalty, reliability and accomplishment." Cherundolo will be entering his 16th season with Hannover.
The defender, known affectionately as "the Mayor of Hannover," appeared in his 299th Bundesliga game last Saturday against Bayer Leverkusen, breaking the previous club record, set by Juergen Bandura from 1964-74.
He played for the U.S. in the last three World Cups.
