FC Nuremberg revealed on its official website on Tuesday that the 23-year-old has suffered a torn ligament in his left knee during training. The statement claims that Chandler will miss at least three to four weeks which would make him doubtful for the United States' friendly against Belgium in Cleveland on May 29 and questionable for the team's exhibition match against Germany in D.C. on June 2.
Chandler is German-American and his indecisiveness to become cap-tied to the U.S. is well-documented. The right back declined opportunities to play for the U.S. during the 2011 Gold Cup and several World Cup qualifiers and speculation suggested that Chandler was holding out in the hopes of joining Germany. Chandler put an end to U.S. fans dismay by finally playing for the U.S. in qualifier against Honduras earlier this year, ending his eligibility for Germany. Still, it was expected that Chandler was looking forward to the game on June 2 despite it being a friendly.
Chandler will miss Nuremberg's remaining two matches of the Bundesliga season against Fortuna Dusseldorf and Werder Bremen.
