Colorado made an addition prior to the closing of the MLS transfer window, boosting its back line with the Deportivo Cali center back. The close of the MLS transfer window went largely without a peep, but the Colorado Rapids made sure to make one addition prior to the deadline.
The Rapids announced the signing of 23-year-old center back German Mera on loan from Colombian top-flight club Deportivo Cali for the remainder of the season Monday. The 6-foot-2 Mera has played in 56 games in all competitions for Deportivo Cali over the last three seasons, and he last played on May 1 in a Copa Colombia match against Cortulua. Mera he provides another option in defense for manager Oscar Pareja, who has been forced to look down his depth chart all season after a rash of injuries struck the club.
“Germán is a big, strong and talented young defender with experience at the top level in Colombia," Rapids technical director Paul Bravo said in a team statement. "Bringing him in gives us some good depth along the back line, as he can play both centrally and on the left. We’re looking forward to welcoming him to the club."
The MLS transfer window, which applies to all player signings requiring an international transfer certificate, is closed until July 9, when it will remain open again until Aug. 8.
