Utah referee dies after being punched in rec league game

A Utah recreational soccer league referee tragically died Saturday after complications from being punched by a teenage player a week ago, police confirmed to the Associated Press.

According to reports, Ricardo Portillo, 46, was punched by a 17-year-old goalkeeper after he whistled for a foul and issued a yellow card to the unnamed player. Portillo suffered brain swelling and slipped into a coma after being taken to a Salt Lake City area hospital, where he later passed away.

The assailant had been detained in a juvenile center for assault following the altercation, but he may face more charges now that Portillo has died, the AP is reporting.
