American international Jermaine Jones nets in Champions League draw

The German-born midfielder found the net to give his club side a potentially valuable away goal.
Don't be surprised to hear a few "USA" chants from citizens of Gelsenkirchen tonight.

U.S. national team midfielder Jermaine Jones scored an away goal for Schalke 04 against Galatasaray in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie, a goal that could prove to be the decider if the return ends as a scoreless draw.

Burak Yilmaz put the home side up early, capitalizing on a mistake from Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes, but Die Knappen were not kept down for too long, taking control of the game.

It was Jones - coming off an assist for the U.S national team earlier this month - who netted just before halftime, turning home a cross from the effervescent Jefferson Farfan.

With the goal, Jones became the first American to score in the Champions League knockout round since DaMarcus Beasley scored for PSV against Monaco in 2005.

The two sides will meet again on March 12 for the second leg of the series.
