Philadelphia Union's McLaughlin to train with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim

The midfielder becomes the third member of the Union to train abroad this season, joining Zac MacMath and Cristhian Hernandez.
Philadelphia Union midfielder Jimmy McLaughlin is off to a 10-day offseason training stint with Bundesliga side TSG Hoffenheim 1899, the MLS club announced on Monday. He will return to Philadelphia on Nov. 21.

Signed as the Union’s second Homegrown Player in December 2011, McLaughlin is participating in his first training trip abroad. There, he'll link up with a host of U.S. national team players, as Hoffenheim is the club that employs both Fabian Johnson and Danny Williams. U.S. youth midfielder Russell Cannouse is a youth player at Hoffenheim as well.

McLaughlin is the third member of the Union to train abroad this season. Goalkeeper Zac MacMath is currently training at Everton, while forward Cristhian Hernandez is with Real Sociedad in Spain.

McLaughlin saw action in one first-team match this season, playing 17 minutes against Sporting Kansas City on Oct. 24. He was also loaned for a portion of the season to the Harrisburg City Islanders. McLaughlin played one season of college soccer at Colgate University, where he was named the 2011 Patriot League Rookie of the Year.
