After having the ultimate late-bloomer season, Gordon is happy to earn his first international cap and make an impact as a 30-year-old.
"I'm just happy to be here and contribute," said Gordon. "I wanted to prove Jurgen Klinsmann right in taking a chance on me."
When Gordon and Johnson were picked ahead of Jozy Altidore and Chris Wondolowski, several journalists and fans questioned Klinsmann's decision. But Gordon delivered for Klinsmann in a clutch moment.
Instead of being nervous when called upon in the 73rd minute, Gordon looked at the moment with excitement and wanted to make an impact.
"I was excited," said Gordon. "There was a sense of urgency. We needed a goal and we got it."
At 30 years old, Gordon has had the ultimate late-bloomer season, scoring 13 goals in his first full year with the San Jose Earthquakes. His previous career-high was five goals with the LA Galaxy during the 2008 season.
