The Spurs boss says that the American is still the top goalkeeper at Tottenham despite the club having brought in Hugo Lloris.
The 41-year-old's place in the team has been in question since the club signed French star Hugo Lloris, but Friedel put in another strong showing for Spurs in a 2-1 win over QPR on Sunday, and André Villas-Boas made it clear after the match that he would stick with the American for the time being.
"We have made Hugo alert that whenever Brad has a bad game it won’t produce a change. These things have to be taken very carefully," Villas-Boas said. "We don't doubt Hugo's dimension and talent, but it’s not in our mind at the moment. We are paying respect to a player who is performing very well. At the right time, if needed or not, we will think about it. Hugo is an extremely good professional. He wants to come back into the team, but he is competing with Brad for that position, and he will certainly have his chances very soon."
The backing from his manager will be a welcome relief to Friedel, who recently responded publicly, and angrily, to comments made by Fabien Barthez about him starting in front of Lloris.
