Jermaine Jones and Sacha Kljestan both got their Champions League campaigns off to a good start on Tuesday.
Jones and Schalke took a 2-1 win over Olympiakos, with the German-born USA star playing all but the final few minutes of stoppage time and helping to control the Greek side's midfield in route to the victory.
Kljestan put in a full match with Anderlecht as his club took an unexpected 0-0 draw away from struggling Italian power AC Milan on the first matchday. The midfielder nearly opened the scoring in the first half with a dipping effort, but saw his shot pushed away.
For Schalke, the win puts the team level on points with Arsenal at the top of Group B, while Anderlecht's single point has the club level with Milan for the second spot in Group C after the first round of games.
Anderlecht will face Spanish side Malage on the second matchday and Schalke will take on Montpellier in its second match of the group stage.
Michael Parkhurst, the other USA player involved with the group stage of this season's tournament, will get his and FC Nordsjælland's run underway on Wednesday with a match against Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk.
