Goal.com’s WPS Player of Week 14: Los Angeles Sol’s Marta
Marta had yet again another impressive week for the Los Angeles Sol. She tallied three goals, leading L.A. to back-to-back wins.
With week 14 of Women’s Professional Soccer behind us, one player stood heads above the rest. Los Angeles Sol’s Marta tallied three goals this week and is now tied with teammate Camille Abily for WPS scoring leader with eight goals. Goal.com selected Marta for WPS Player of Week 14.
“Marta put three balls in the net this week, more than enough to earn her WPS Player of the Week votes,” Goal.com’s Allen Ramsey said. “The Brazilian had one goal in 2-1 win over St. Louis on Wednesday and backed it up with a brace against Chicago on Sunday.”
This past week, Marta tallied the game-winner in the 73rd minute to lead the Sol to a 2-1 win over Saint Louis Athletica on Wednesday. Then on Saturday she tallied two second-half goals in the 62nd and 92+ minutes to secure Los Angeles’ 4-0 win over the Chicago Red Stars.
“Two more goals for Marta on Saturday, and another thumping by the Sol as they beat the Chicago Red Stars 4-0,” Goal.com’s Shane Evans said. “Her play this season has made the argument less of one about who is the best women's player in the world.”
Marta has been unstoppable for the Sol this season. She’s played every minute in 14 of the Sol’s 15 matches, helping the club to a 10-1-3 record and earn the first WPS playoff berth. Marta has recorded eight goals total and three assists. Her 36 shots rank first on the Sol and second in WPS. Marta’s 22 shots on goal rank tops on the team and in WPS.
Marta is a three-time FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year. The Brazilian is without a doubt a true talent. Marta is also up for an ESPY.
“Marta's predatory instincts in front of goal were on full display this week,” Goal.com contributor Jennifer Dawson said. “In the two games Los Angeles played this round, she scored three goals and terrorized opponents in the process. Add that to last week's results, and she has tallied four goals in seven days. Her work rate, finishing skills, and understanding with her teammates are a deadly combination for foes and an integral part of L.A.'s success.”
Marta is one of a kind and the WPS is lucky to have her. She’s continually made history with the club and has no signs of slowing down any time soon.
