The Bard: Tap the Rockies
With a bye week, Sky Blue FC headed to Colorado. Karen Bardsley tells us a bit about their stay.
This past week was a bye week for us (Sky Blue FC). So the team decided to pack up the mosquito repellant and hiking boots and head to Colorado for a few days. We arrived in the Mile High City and were greeted by a glorious atmospheric condition better known as “sunshine.” It’s been a while since we’ve seen such a sight. So long in fact that I believed it had gone the way of the coelacanth. Fortunately for human kind it hasn’t. That giant ball of gas in the center of our universe in the Milk Way galaxy is still burning slightly less brightly then at it’s earliest conception, despite the lack of proof over New Jersey.
We trained for an hour and a half at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Denver, Colorado until we were rudely interrupted by another atmospheric disturbance, “lightning.” It’s an amazing sight, but it’s more like an extremely unwelcome houseguest. I mean, you’ve got your buddy “thunder”. He’s pretty cool - he goes about his own way and wouldn’t hurt a fly. He’s just loud and boisterous. But lightning doesn’t really bring anything to the table. Lightning is more like a screaming attention-seeking child, acting out and screaming, “look at me!” by destroying things, and murdering innocent golfers.
The team, ever so dejected by the appearance of the gruesome twosome (thunder and lightning) plodded back to the bus and headed to the hotel in preparation for dinner with our kind Coloradoan hosts. We arrived at what I thought was the wrong place, (Stanley British Primary School) until we saw people wearing red Colorado women’s soccer celebration tee-shirts. It was a fantastic spread I must say - the food was excellent and the entertainment was bar none, especially my thumb removal trick…smash hit!
After we spent a few hours introducing ourselves, taking pictures and signing autographs it was time to leave our new friends. It was still early when we arrived back at the hotel and I felt a severe need to see a film. Anita Asante, Kelly Parker and I elected for a scary film and the winner was “Drag Me to Hell.” We hailed a fetid cab and held our breath all the way to the ticket office. This movie was hilarious!! The beauty of it all was that it was such a terrible movie that it was actually incredibly entertaining. Wonderfully timed pauses, one-liners and pure absurdity actually made this ridiculous film comical. I thought I was going to leave the theater feeling disappointed, but I was actually extremely jovial. It was a great way to end the night.
The following day was game day. Long story short, we played 29 minutes and 50 seconds of the first half until the game was indefinitely postponed due to our friend lightning. We were forced off the pitch and into the locker room where we waited for an hour and a half. By the time the storm passed and due to time constraints both teams decided to play another 29 minutes and 50 sec on an auxiliary field and unfortunately to no avail – the match ended in a scoreless tie. Afterward, we joined the Colorado Force for a brief clinic and headed back into the stadium to watch the Rapids draw with FC Dallas.
Good times. Come out and see us play this Sunday at 6:00pm Eastern as Sky Blue FC takes on St. Louis Athletica! If you can’t make it, tune in to WPS Sunday on Fox Soccer Channel.

P.S. If anyone has my truck’s bed liner, I’d appreciate it if you’d return it.
