Women's Professional Soccer News And Notes

This is a busy week for Women's Professional Soccer. The All-Star game is heading to St. Louis. Marta and Kerri Hanks are up for an ESPY. And LA is still making player moves.

All-Star Game Heading to St. Louis
The Women’s Professional Soccer All-Star match will be held August 30, 2009 in St. Louis. Anheuser-Busch Soccer Park in Fenton, MO, which is home to St. Louis Athletica, will host the inaugural All-Star match. The match will air on Fox Soccer Channel beginning at 5:00 p.m. ET.

“St. Louis has such a rich soccer tradition and great fans that we thought it would make for a terrific location – right in the heart of America – for our first WPS All-Star Game,” WPS Commissioner Tonya Antonucci said.

A WPS All-Star side of 18 players will face an international team, which will be made later.

“Our league is part of the bigger growth of the women’s game at the global level and we wanted to acknowledge that by bringing in a club from outside the league to play in the U.S.,” Antonucci said. “MLS has shown that it’s a great format for fans, and international competitions among leagues is something that we hope to be part of in the future, so this is a first step.”

Eleven players will be voted on by 25 percent each of fans, media, players and coaches. The seven other players will be at-large selections by Antonucci and the to-be named All-Star Head Coach. The WPS players will vote for the head coach. The announcement of players and coaches will take place in late July.

ESPY In Marta’s Future?
Marta, the Brazilian sensation currently leading the Los Angeles Sol has been nominated for an ESPY. The three-time FIFA World Player of the Year was selected to be in the category of Best Female International Athlete.

Marta will be in a category with four other athletes: pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva (Russia), golfer Lorena Ochoa (Mexico), swimmer Stephanie Rice (Australia) and tennis player Dinara Safina (Russia).

ESPN created The ESPY Awards to honor athletes with impressive performances for the past year or as the ESPYS put it… Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards. The 17th annual ESPYS will be taped Wednesday, July 15, 2009 live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Samuel Jackson will host the festivities. The Awards will be shown Sunday, July 19th at 9:00 p.m. ET.

Hanks Also Receives An ESPY Nod
St. Louis Athletica forward Kerri Hanks has also been named a finalist for an ESPY. Hanks is nominated for the Best Women’s College Athlete among with four others. The two-time MAC Hermann Trophy winner left Notre Dame ranked at the top of the program with 84 goals and 73 assists. She led the attack of an annual powerhouse, which registered a record of 92-10-3 (.890) during her tenure.

Hanks ended the 2008 campaign ranked fifth in the nation in goals (20), tied for third in assists (15) and tied for second in points (55). Hanks became the fourth women’s player to receive the Hermann Trophy, joining North Caroloina’s Mia Hamm and Cindy Parlow and Portland’s Christine Sinclair (FC Gold Pride).

Hanks is listed on the ballot with Courtney Kupets (Georgia gymnastics), Danielle Lawrie (Washington softball), Maya Moore (Connecticut women’s basketball) and Dana Vollmer (California swimming).

Player Change For The Sol
The Los Angeles Sol signed forward Lyndsey Patterson to a developmental contract. Patterson played for the W-League’s Seattle Sounders and Atlanta Silverbacks after a standout career at University of Tennessee. During her career with the Lady Vols, Patterson registered 20 goals and 24 assists. Her 64 points rank seventh all-time, while goals rank eighth and assists ranks sixth.

The 26-year-old also has coaching experience under her belt at Tennessee and Embry – Riddle University.

“Lyndsey has a quick and clever attacking personality,” General Manager Charlie Naimo said. “I can see her fitting in extremely well with our style of play.”

The Sol also promoted McCall Zerboni to the senior roster. Zerboni signed a developmental contract after being drafted in the seventh round of the 2009 WPS Draft. A UCLA alum, Zerboni has appeared in four games for LA this season. Zerboni moves into an opening that was left when Greer Barnes was waived.
