Proud Howard & Donovan Revel In USA’s Triumph Over Spain

Two of the Stars And Stripes’ biggest players were overjoyed following their historic win over the European champions.

A good majority of the football world was left in disbelief after the United States pulled off one of the most stunning upsets at international level when they downed a seemingly unstoppable Spain side 2-0 in the semi-finals of the FIFA Confederations Cup.

Shot-stopper Tim Howard, whose goal was pelted with shot after shot during the second half of the game, could not hide his pride and joy following the victory, but he was equally as befuddled.

“We are proud that this group of 23 players are going to represent the US in a major final,” he told football365.co.za.

“We are scratching our heads the same way you guys are, but it goes to show what hard work and commitment to each other can bring.

“Sometimes, football is a funny thing. Sometimes you get lucky on certain occasions and we definitely rode our luck against the best team in the world. They are unbelievable,” he added.

Landon Donovan also believed that the team’s unity and hardwork was the key in defeating La Furia Roja.

“We did a very, very good job of making it hard for them,” he told reporters after the match.

“Most teams respect them a little too much and back off them. We did a good job of being harder and more aggressive than most teams do against them. The last thing you want to do is let them get into their rhythm. As you saw in the second half, they can be very good.

“Besides, when we had our chances, we took them.”

The Americans will now go on to play either South Africa or Brazil in the final on June 28.
