Scoreless Draw For Washington And Chicago

The Washington Freedom and Chicago Red Stars combined for 33 shot on the night. Neither team was able to find the net for the 0-0 result.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Chicago Red Stars are keeping the unbeaten streak alive. While the Freedom finally earned a shutout in a 0-0 draw Saturday.

There definitely wasn’t a shortage of shots in the match. The Red Stars tallied nine, including one on goal. But Washington was incredibly ready for a goal. The home team collected 24 shots – including nine in the first half and 15 in the second half.

The match marked the second time this season Chicago and Washington have ended in a draw. April 11th, they posted a 1-1 result.

First Half

Washington didn’t waste any time getting started. The Freedom sent four shots toward goal in the first 20 minutes of play. Chicago answered with two shots. Neither team was able to find the net.

In the 25th minute, the Red Stars had their best opportunity of the first half. Megan Rapinoe had a great look at goal, when she sent a perfect shot just over the post.

Washington had its best chance in the 41st minute. Allie Long sailed a shot over the net.

Despite three Chicago shots and nine Washington shots, the first half ended with no goals.

Second Half

Both teams continued the pressure in the second half. But it was the Washington Freedom who kept Chicago on their toes. The first 15 minutes were relatively easy. But in the final 30, it was all about the Freedom.

In the 60th minute, the home team received a huge advantage. Chicago’s Karen Carney took down Abby Wambach with a hard foul. Carney was shown a straight red, giving Washington a one-player advantage for the remainder of the match. It was a bit of déjà vu for both teams, as Chicago lost defender Frida Ostberg to a red card the first time these clubs met.

The Freedom took advantage of the situation, firing 13 shots at goal in the remainder of the match.

Red Stars goalkeeper Caroline Jonsson kept up the dominance, making eight saves for a league-best 46 total. She also posted her fourth shutout.

Freedom netminder Erin McLeod made one save on the night. But the restructured defense held strong. Washington lost Alex Singer to injury. They inserted newly acquired defender Ali Krieger to the mix. Chicago had eight shots on goal, but all were stopped for the Freedom’s first shutout of the season.

Chicago is the lone WPS squad that is still undefeated on the road with a 1-0-4 record. Red Stars coach Emma Hayes referred to her side as the draw specialist.

“We just need to put it in the back of the net,” Hayes said.

The Red Stars improve to a 2-3-5 record (11 points) and moves into a four-way tie for points. The Freedom (3-3-4) takes an extra point, helping the club maintain its second place standing (13 points).

Chicago heads to New Jersey to face Sky Blue FC Wednesday, June 17. Washington will play at Saint Louis Athetica Saturday, June 20.
