The Bard: Midwest Swing

Sky Blue FC goalkeeper Karen Bardsley talks about her St. Louis findings in this week's The Bard.

I have never been to St. Louis before this past Sunday. I must admit I wasn’t completely sure what Missouri had to offer me besides Budweiser, the Eads Bridge, and the infamous Gateway Arch. Here are some things I do know about St. Louis. The city plays host to three well-known professional sports teams; the Rams of the NFL, the Cardinals of MLB, and the Blues of the NHL. It’s in the “Midwest,” and it lies on the border of a humid continental climate and a humid subtropical climate…but what else?

Well, despite my proclivity toward St. Louis, it actually wasn’t the worst place I’d ever been. (Moscow, Idaho…sorry). It was actually quite nice. The people were extremely polite, the landscape was lush, the cookies were delicious, and the hotel was chateau-like, very charming. We were even treated to a thrilling thunder and lightning storm right over the field just before the game. Apparently, brilliant bolts of streak lightning caused us to be scoreboard-less for the entire, or what I expected was the entire 90-minutes, but I’ll never know… Certainly wouldn’t have hurt to have some more time. Shucks…

Unfortunately the result was not in our favor this week. We did some good things. We had opportunities to get in behind the defense, some 1 v 1 situations, and in one instance an open net. But it seemed that no matter how much we wanted to will the ball into the back of the net, it seemed as though there was an invisible force field keeping the ball out of the St. Louis goal. On the bright side our flight back to Newark was empty and early. Anyway, it’s time to put this weekend behind us and focus on a good week of training in preparation for LA.

Do work!

Karen
