Women's Professional Soccer News And Notes
Expansion side Philadelphia will be hosting a mini-camp later this month. The National Soccer Hall of Fame has a WPS display. WPS has inked a deal with Comcast for regional broadcasts.
Philadelphia Independence Hosting Mini-Camp
The Philadelphia Independence will kick off their inaugural season in 2010. In the meantime, the club is looking for some talent. June 23-June 25, the organization will host 32 women in search of their first player. The mini-camp will be held at Chestnut Hill College. The mini-camp is designed to complement the WPS expansion draft and international draft in August, and the college draft in January.
"The WPS has the absolute best female soccer players in the world," Coach Matt Driver said. "And I know that this talent-rich Delaware Valley region has quality, world-class players right here amongst us who deserve a shot at the big leagues… I see them in the Independence minor league programs. If we sign our first player from this mini-camp, that's a super story of a local kid making good; if we don't see the play we are hoping for, it will be a fun event for the players and coaches nonetheless."
Time Change for Saint Louis Athletica vs. Washington Freedom
There’s a time change for Saint Louis. Saturday, June 20th Athletica will host the Washington Freedom at 1:00 p.m. CT at Anheuser-Busch Soccer Park.
WPS Inaugural Ball On Display At The Hall
The first goal in Women’s Professional Soccer history is now on display at the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Los Angeles Sol defender Allison Falk scored the first goal in WPS history – a 2-0 Sol win over the Washington Freedom. In the sixth minute, Aya Miyami sent a freekick into the box. Falk headed it home past Washington goalkeeper Briana Scurry and into the net, making history.
The inaugural ball and lineup sheets from the game, plus a photograph of the first goal make up the display at the National Soccer Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is located in Oneonta, New York. The mission of the Hall is to tell the story of soccer in the United States.
“We are proud to share this historical moment with the National Soccer Hall of Fame and Museum,” WPS Commissioner Tonya Antonucci said in a Hall of Fame press release. “This ball and these line-ups represent just the beginning of Women’s Professional Soccer in the United States. We look forward to many more signature WPS moments and many more opportunities to make history in women’s soccer.”
WPS Partners with Comcast Sports Group
The June 7th match between the Chicago Red Stars and FC Gold Pride was the start of a partnership with Comcast Sports Group Network. A four-game regional package included the Red Stars match and three upcoming matches. Regional stations include Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, Comcast SportsNet New England, Comcast SportsNet Chicago and Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic.
