WPS Previews: Week Eight - Part Two
Week Eight of Women’s Professional Soccer features some must-see matches. Saturday, the Chicago Red Stars host FC Gold Pride at 8:30 p.m. ET. And Sunday, the Boston Breakers will host the Washington Freedom at 6:00 p.m. ET. It’s a weekend full of games, with Saint Louis Athletica (1-2-2) sitting this weekend out.

Chicago Red Stars vs. FC Gold Pride, Toyota Park, Bridgeview, Ill., Saturday May 16 at 8:30 p.m. ET
The Chicago Red Stars (2-1-2) saw their unbeaten streak come to an end last weekend, with a 2-0 loss to Sky Blue FC. The club is back for another home match, hosting FC Gold Pride on Saturday. Both clubs lost matches last weekend to teams that had yet to win a game. Saturday’s match will mark the first meeting for the two teams.
The Red Stars offense couldn’t seem to get into any type of rhythm in Sunday’s game. With six shots, just three on goal Chicago looked like a different team than they did a week before when they topped the Boston Breakers 4-0. Lindsay Tarpley leads the attack for Chicago with two goals and an assist. Four other players have tallied one goal each. There are a lot of offensive options out there. Goalkeeper Caroline Jonsson and the defense have allowed just three goals this season. Jonsson has come up huge for the squad with 25 saves and three clean sheets. Red Stars head coach Emma Hayes prides herself on teams that are strong both offensively and defensively. When Chicago plays team defense, they are tough to beat.
FC Gold Pride (2-3-1) is fresh off a 1-0 loss to Saint Louis Athletica. Saint Louis pulled off the 1-0 victory courtesy of an early goal. But FCGP was in it until the end. Gold Pride out shot Athletica by a 12-6 margin, with five shots on goal. Saint Louis however had all six shots on goal, causing FCGP goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart to have a busy day. Christine Sinclair led the attack with five shots.
Offensively FCGP has tallied seven goals this season. Tiffeny Milbrett is first on the team in scoring with two goals. While Barnhart has allowed eight goals on the season, while making 23 saves.
Between both teams… they have 13 goals and a lot of talent. If Chicago turns up its defense, the goals will fall. And FC Gold Pride may be in trouble. Although, FC Gold Pride has been known to score some goals. Expect a good match either way.
Boston Breakers vs. Washington Freedom, Harvard Stadium, Cambridge, Mass., Sunday May 17 at 6:00 p.m. ET
In the final match of the weekend the Boston Breakers will host the Washington Freedom. Boston (3-2-1) played the Los Angeles Sol to a 0-0 draw last weekend. The Freedom (1-2-2) had the weekend off. But the lat time out, they played Saint Louis Athletica to a 3-3 draw. The two teams lead the league in goals with 17 combined – eight for Boston and nine for Washington.
While last week the Breakers weren’t able to find their offense, they are bound to score this week. Eight goals in six games is a good start for a new team. Kelly Smith leads the attack with four goals and one assist. Kristine Lilly has two goals. There are a number of offensive threats on the club with 64 shots, 28 on goal. Six Washington Freedom players have combined for nine goals on the season. Lori Lindsey and Abby Wambach lead the offense with two goals each. But there are many other offensive options out there. Defensively, Briana Scurry and Katie Jo Spisak have served in goal. The duo has allowed 12 goals, six each. Goalkeeper Erin McLeod has finally joined the club and should be adding some talent to the backline soon.
Boston and Washington are bound to be explosive. Expect both teams to come out firing on all cylinders.
