First Win For Sky Blue FC, First Loss For Chicago
Sky Blue FC doubled their goal total for the season and earned their first match in a 2-0 win over the Chicago Red Stars.
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. – Sky Blue FC came out firing on all cylinders Sunday against the Chicago Red Stars. The visitors jumped out to an early lead and dominated the majority of the match earning their first WPS win by a 2-0 margin.
Sky Blue tallied one goal in each half to earn the 2-0 win. The Red Stars never seemed to get into any type of rhythm, dropping their first match of the season.
First Half
Sky Blue FC got a quick one past Chicago Red Stars goalkeeper Caroline Jonsson in the eighth minute. Sky Blue midfielder Collette McCallum sent the ball to forward Sarah Walsh. She crossed the ball into the left side netting to give her club a 1-0 lead.
The visitors kept up the pressure. In the 10th minute forward Heather O’Reilly challenged Jonsson in a one-vs-one battle. Jonsson came out of the box and won the challenge.
McCallum almost had a goal of her own in the 21st minute. She rocketed a freekick directly into Jonsson’s arms.
Chicago’s Megan Rapinoe had a shot in the 45th minute, sending the ball high. Sky Blue FC limited Chicago’s chances to just two shots in the first half, none of them on goal. The visitors took nine shots, with four on goal. Jonsson made three saves, while Sky Blue keeper Jenni Branam was unchallenged in the box.
Second Half
Karen Carney had a quality chance for the home team early in the second half. She sent a long ball toward goal. It bounced of Branam’s chest and rolled to the ground. Branam scrambled to get the loose ball. She collected it and sent it back into play.
Carney took a freekick in the 74th minute, which was cleared. Before Chicago could get on the board, Sky Blue struck again. In the 79th minute, Sky Blue (1-2-2) doubled its lead. Kelly Parker crossed the ball to Natasha Kai in the right side of the box. Kai tapped it in for her first goal of the campaign and a 2-0 lead.
The Red Stars didn’t give up. In extra time, Lindsay Tarpley had a quality chance. She blasted the ball toward goal. It bounced off Branam’s arms and out for a corner kick. Branam stopped the corner kick as well, keeping her net clean for the second time this season.
Chicago finally found some offense in the second half with three shots on goal, and four shots overall. With the 2-0 result, the Red Stars (2-1-2) dropped their first match of the year. Jonsson allowed her second and third goals of the season.
Sky Blue FC had one shot on goal that turned into a goal. The 2-0 win marked their first win of the season. And the two goals doubled their previous goal total of one in four games.
