Once Saint Louis Athletica received confirmation that leading-scorer Daniela would be out indefinitely, they had a few decisions to make. Saint Louis traded a conditional draft pick in 2010 and a first-round draft pick in 2011 to the Los Angeles Sol. Athletica received defender Kendall Fletcher and forward Christie Welsh. Current Athletica defender Sheree Gray was waived to make room for the new duo.

“We had no choice due to Daniela’s injury so we had to make a change in the roster. We lacked a little bit of offense and we lacked physical play in the middle,” Athletica head coach/general manager Jorge Barcellos said. “Fletcher has a lot of potential and is a very physical player in the middle and Welsh is a player who shoots well from outside of the box. I hope they can contribute to what we are doing here in St. Louis.”

Welsh adds another offensive option to Saint Louis front line. The team has struggled to find the net with only three goals on 61 shots. The 28-year-old appeared 39 times with the U.S. Women’s National Team, collecting 20 goals.

“I am very excited and looking forward to joining a great team and an outstanding organization,” said Welsh. “I can definitely contribute on the offensive end and I know my role will become more specific once I begin training with the team.”

Fletcher played alongside Athletica’s Lori Chalupny at the University of North Carolina.  The duo helped the Tarheels to a perfect 27-0-0 record en route to the 2003 NCAA National Championship. On the international level, the 24-year-old represented the United States as a member of the U.S. Women’s U-19 National Team in 2002, which captured the World Cup Championship. Fletcher will join fellow champions Chalupny, Angie Woznuk and Kerri Hanks as a member of the Saint Louis franchise.

“From a playing standpoint I am thrilled to be joining Saint Louis Athletica,” said Fletcher. “I am really excited because I know a lot of the players here. They have had a slow start in terms of wins and losses but they are an extremely dynamic team.”
