Goal.com's WPS Player Of Week 6: Saint Louis Athletica's Daniela
Saint Louis Athletica finally found the net this past weekend. Daniela led that attack, netting two of the club's three goals in a 3-3 draw.
After another exciting weekend of Women’s Professional Soccer action, it was hard for Goal.com’s staff to choose a Player of the Week. However, Saint Louis Athletica’s Daniela edged out the competition by a narrow margin to earn the weekly honor. Daniela scored the first two goals in Athletica history, leading her team to a 3-3 draw.
“It's a tough choice for WPS' player of the week this week with plenty of options, but Daniela is a deserving winner,” Goal.com’s Allen Ramsey said. “The St. Louis striker scored twice in a 3-3 draw with the second being a wonderful strike from 25 yards out.”
Daniela scored unassisted bombs in the 7th and 41st minutes to give Saint Louis a 2-1 lead going into the half. After 276 scoreless minutes for Saint Louis Brazilian star Daniela found the net. She knocked in a Katie Jo Spisak save to give her club a 1-0 lead. And just before the half, she buried a left-footed shot into the upper netting for her second goal of the night.
“The midfielder relentlessly drove the first half Athletica onslaught, taking shots herself as well as bringing her teammates into the attack with long overhead passes and short flicks,” Goal.com’s Jennifer Dawson said. “Daniela scored two goals, Athletica's first goals of the season, one of which was an absolute beauty. Though tightly marked, she managed to create space for herself and fire off a long distance, powerful shot that came in just under the cross bar.”
In four games, Daniela has taken a team-leading 15 shots. She single-handedly has fueled Athletica’s attack. With six shots on Sunday alone, four shots on goal turned into a couple of goals. Saint Louis lost momentum late in the match when Daniela exited the game with a knee injury. She was taken to the hospital for further evaluation after the match.
Washington Freedom’s Sonia Bompastor also received a couple of player of the week nods. In Washington’s 3-3 draw with Athletica, she tallied 29th and 90th minute goals to insure her club would salvage a point.
“In a thrilling 3-3 draw, Bompastor scored twice, the second of which came in the 90th minute to tie things up,” Goal.com’s Zac Rigg said. “Washington uncorked 28 shots, nine of which were from Bompastor alone.”
The Boston Breakers’ Kelly Smith and Kristine Lilly also received a couple of votes. As always, Smith led her team with precision and skill. Smith tallied the fastest goal in WPS history, netting one in the 2nd minute. And Lilly she scored the game-winner in the 55th minute to give the Breakers a 2-1 win.
“Hats off to Kristine Lilly for securing the Breakers win over the previously undefeated Sol,” Goal.com’s Angela Tavares said. “Her second goal of the night against WUSA Breakers teammate Karina LeBlanc helped regain Boston's momentum after last week's thrashing in Chicago and put the first notch in the loss category for the Sol. The trick now is to see if Boston can do it two times in a row.”
