Kreis Praises “Flawless” RSL After 6-Goal Bonanza

Real Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis was full of praise for the home side in thei wake of their 6-0 thrashing of New England at Rio Tinto.

SANDY, Utah--Saturday was a special night at Rio Tinto Stadium as the home side scored six goals against the New England Revolution. All six goals came in the second half, but the dominance started from the opening whistle.

The rarity of the event wasn’t lost on Real Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis.

“It’s very rare in a professional athlete’s life where you can be a part of a match like that," he said. "Almost everything that happened tonight was flawless. That was awesome. It was just fun to be a part of.”

The sentiment was echoed throughout the locker room as the entire group was jubilant.

“I thought every guy was on the top of their game,” said midfielder Clint Mathis.

“It was flawless. It seemed like everybody was on point,” added forward Yura Movsisyan.

A couple of themes have emerged for RSL on this young season: the team can score at home, as evidenced by their 12 goals in three home matches; and it can’t on the road as the club has yet to notch a road goal after two matches.

When asked about the disparity between scoring at home versus on the road, Kreis struggled for an explanation “I don’t know. I think we’re going to have to consider as a staff whether or not we’re going to change our mentality on the road.”

The storyline that Movsisyan was glad did not continue was that of him getting off numerous shots without finding the back of the net. He entered the match with 17 shot attempts in only 4 games – the only player with more than 15 shots who had not scored.

“I didn’t have any pressure from my team, just myself. This builds confidence,” Movisyan told the media after the match.

On the New England side, the team had held on in four previous matches to earn points in all of them, despite being decimated by early season injuries. As you could imagine, they were disappointed at losing in such a fashion.

“Things caught up with us tonight. We’re banged up, we’re inexperienced, and we made mistakes all the way up the field,” explained a disappointed Revolution coach, Steve Nicol.

Midfielder Wells Thompson showed a more bitter reaction to the match, “I think everybody in this locker room is pissed off, down, and a little bit embarrassed, so it will be nice to be back home and be fired up to come out against Houston.”

Unfortunately, when losing a match so completely it’s hard to see any sort of silver lining. As midfielder Jeff Larentowicz explained, “There are no positives to take away from this game. The only thing we can take away from it is knowing that we have a game next week and everybody is professional and we’ve got to make the changes so that we don’t let it happen again.”

Both clubs will likely look for improvements to come in the future. In the case of Real Salt Lake, they look to take their scoring act on the road. For New England, the squad looks to get healthy, as prior to this match it had somehow managed to find success despite an anemic roster.
