Goal.com's WPS Player of the Week: Kelly Smith
Kelly Smith collected a goal and an assist to lead the Boston Breakers to a 2-0 win over Saint Louis Athletica on Saturday.
In week three of the Women’s Professional Soccer season, the Goal.com editors have selected Kelly Smith of the Boston Breakers as our player of the week.
“It was an awesome showing from Smith against St. Louis,” associate editor Allen Ramsey said. “She was by far the best player on the pitch, controlled possession well even with the terrible conditions, and scored a goal. The real selling point for her being player of the week was a wonderful assist on Kristine Lilly's goal, which sealed the Breakers 2-0 win.”
In week one, Smith tallied the lone goal for Boston in a 2-1 loss to FC Gold Pride. But in week two, she showed her true colors. Smith collected a goal and an assist in Boston’s 2-0 win over Saint Louis Athletica.
“The Boston Breakers English striker put in a truly class performance for her WPS side on Saturday setting up a goal and scoring one of her own in the Breakers 2-0 victory,” associate editor Shane Evans said. “The former Arsenal Ladies player and veteran of the English national team will be a difference maker for Boston this season and this weekend's performance was evidence of that.”
Smith’s resume is long and impressive. The 31-year-old has played in over seventy matches for the English National Team. The former member of Arsenal Ladies played for the Philadelphia Charge in the WUSA from 2001-03, winning the hearts of Americans.
“I have to admit, as a long-time Kelly Smith fan, I'm almost inclined to put her name in every week. Though she is nearly always good, she was superlative this week for the Boston Breakers” Goal.com chief editor Andrea Canales said. “It's no surprise that Smith became, last week, the first player to earn goals in both the WUSA and WPS. She has hit the ground running in the new league.”
With the win, Boston improves to a 1-1-0 record. But after two games, Smith has proven she’s a player to watch. She's tied for the league lead in goals with two, alongside Chicago Red Stars' Lindsay Tarpley and Los Angeles Sol's Marta.
Tune in next week for round four’s winner.
