Sky Blue FC Tallies Late in 1-1 WPS Result
The Final WPS match of week three ended in a 1-1 draw. Carrie Dew tallied for FC Gold Pride in the 33rd minute, while Heather O'Reilly added a 76th minute goal.
BRIDGEWATER, NJ - In the third game of WPS Saturday, Sky Blue FC and FC Gold Pride battled to a 1-1 draw. Carrie Dew tallied early for FC Gold Pride, but Heather O’Reilly tallied late in a hard-fought match.
“We as a team are really happy with a lot of things that happened tonight,” O’Reilly said. “The atmosphere of this game was incredible. Our team is getting better and better and we played against some world-class players tonight from FC Gold Pride- the best players in the world. We dominated them and we played a great game. They came back and scored a goal early but we showed a lot of fight and grit and we stayed unified and really put the heat on them.”
FC Gold Pride jumped out to a quick start, and looked strong. The best chance of the half took place in the 17th minute. FCGP’s Keeley Dowling headed an attempt off the bar and out.
In the 33rd minute Dew took advantage of a deflection situation. Weimer sent in a short corner kick. It deflected back to Dew, who sent it into the lower left corner past Sky Blue’s Karen Bardsley for the 1-0 lead.
Four minutes later, Christine Sinclair almost made it 2-0 when she snuck in the box and shot in the 37th minute. Bardsley cleared the attempt.
Second half, Sky Blue FC returned to the pitch reenergized. And in the 76th minute, it paid off. Sarah Walsh served the ball to O’Reilly, who made a run. O’Reilly sent a low shot into the left corner of the goal, tying the game at 1-1.
“We are much more pleased with our performance as a team,” Sky Blue FC coach Ian Sawyers said. “We had more energy and really went after them and felt a little unfortunate at halftime since they only had one shot which was a deflection that went in. We didn’t have enough quality in the final third all night until Heather put that one away and that was the difference.”
In the 86th minute, Eriko Arakawa had FCGP’s most promising shot of the half. She rocketed a shot just over the crossbar.
Sky Blue FC out shot the visitors 15-5, including nine shots on goal to one. FC Gold Pride improves to 1-0-1, while Sky Blue FC is still in search for a win with a 0-1-1 record.
