Red Stars and Freedom End in First WPS Draw
Lindsay Tarpley had an early goal for Chicago. But Washington's Becky Sauerbrunn added a goal of her own for a 1-1 score. Caroline Jonsson was Chicago's hero posting 13 saves on the evening.
BOYDS, Md. - Lindsay Tarpley scored a first-half goal, giving the Chicago Red Stars a 1-0 lead. But second half, the Washington Freedom’s Becky Sauerbrunn added a goal of her own. Washington kept the pressure on Chicago and forced the 1-1 draw.
After Washington missed a couple of early chances, Chicago got on the board. In the 29th minute Tarpley ran inside the box and sent the ball toward the far post. It went into the net behind a diving Briana Scurry for a 1-0 Red Stars lead.
The Freedom kept on the pressure. Sonia Bompastor blasted an attempt toward goal in the 34th minute. Red Stars goalkeeper Caroline Jonsson pushed it over the net. Washington’s Lisa De Vanna added a shot one minute later, but it sailed high.
Second half the Freedom came out on a mission. Three minutes into the half, Allie Long almost scored, when she headed the ball wide right.
Washington tied it up in the 54th minute. Bompastor sent a free kick into the box. Sauerbrunn headed the ball into the net, tying the game at 1-1. The goal marked the first one allowed for the Red Stars in two games.
“We had plenty of chances in the first half. We were knocking on the door,” Sauerbrunn said. “On the goal, Sonia played a great ball to me and I was able to get it in.”
In the 59th minute Brazilian international Cristiane made her Red Stars debut, entering the game as a substitute for Megan Rapinoe.
Wambach almost gave the Freedom the lead in the 62nd minute, heading the attempt just wide left.
Frida Ostberg received her first yellow card in the 54th and her second in the 63rd minute, exiting the game.
Washington kept pushing as time was running out. Bompastor blasted a shot into Scurry’s arms in the 89th minute, Washington held on for the 1-1 draw.
The Freedom out shot the Red Stars 26-8, including dominating the second half and not allowing Chicago one shot.. Jonsson had a busy day making 13 saves for the Red Stars. Chicago improves to 1-0-1. Washington picks up its first point of the season and is not 0-1-1.
