Houston Signs Nigerian Forward Ade Akinbiyi

English leagues veteran Ade Akinbiyi has signed with MLS side Houston Dynamo.

With the offseason departures of key attacking components Dwayne DeRosario and Nate Jaqua, the Houston Dynamo has struggled to get its offense going again. The lack of offensive punch has helped lead the team to one point in the opening two games.

In a move to help remedy that, the Texan team has signed striker Ade Akinbiyi. The 34-year-old comes, most recently, from English Championship side Burnley, but has played for 11 different clubs in his 16 year career.

“Looking at his resume and taking a look at what he has been able to do the last couple of years, he could be a very important part of our team,” Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear said. “You can tell just by looking at him, and his size, the thing that he will be able to bring to us is pace, power and strength.”

The Nigerian will occupy an international spot, and has one international cap with Nigeria. His contract is finalized pending a P1 visa.

“We are very excited to have Ade on board and look forward to his contributions,” Dynamo Chief Operating Officer Chris Canetti said. “He brings a wealth of experience and talent and is an impressive physical presence. I know that he is focused on getting settled into the team and personally challenged to make an impact. I am confident that he will be an excellent addition to our club.”

Wearing number 14, the forward should be available for Houston's April 11 game against the New York Red Bulls.
