Bornstein Added To US Roster For Trinidad Game
The Chivas USA left back is brought in to reinforce a suddenly vulnerable back line. Also, goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann was released back to his club.
U.S. coach Bob Bradley obviously didn’t like what he saw out of his defense in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with El Salvador. And he reacted decisively on Monday afternoon, calling in Chivas USA left back Jonathan Bornstein.
A 24-year-old native of Torrance, California, Bornstein has 14 caps with the US team, his latest one coming in the 3-2 win over Sweden in a friendly in January. His only career World Cup qualifying appearance came in last November’s 2-0 win over Guatemala. He has one international goal.
There was no reason given by US Soccer, but Bornstein’s call up suggests that Hansa Rostock's Heath Pearce, who has been the side's regular left back during this qualifying campaign, could be on his way to the bench for Wednesday’s qualifier against Trinidad & Tobago. Pearce had, arguably, his poorest performance for the national team in Saturday’s draw.
In other US team news, Reading goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann was allowed to return to his club. With the return of number one Tim Howard from suspension, Brad Guzan, who started against El Salvador, drops back to the backup position, leaving Hahnemann the odd man out.
