Chris Wondolowski, Marvin Chavez and Shea Salinas notched goals as San Jose staved off elimination with a 3-0 win vs. the Montreal Impact. Both clubs are 1-2-0 with one game remaining in Group 5. At 2-0-0, Guatemalan side Heredia sits atop the group, from which only one team advances.
The match saw both MLS sides feature strong lineups, though the Impact started out with MLS scoring leader Marco DiVaio and team assist leader Felipe Martins on the bench, alongside starting goalkeeper Troy Perkins.
San Jose took the lead in the 21st minute. Dan Gargan heaved a long throw-in into the box, Steven Lenhart flicked a header in front of goal, and Wondolowski was there to tap it in.
The Earthquakes doubled their advantage in the 58th minute. Bernier mishit a clearance straight to Chavez, who promptly rocketed a shot past Evan Bush from 20 yards out.
Salinas added a third in the 84th minute, beating Jeb Brovsky on the dribble before slotting a shot home to clinch the result.
Back-up goalkeeper David Bingham recorded three saves in the shutout for San jose.
“I thought both teams had great chances early on," Earthquakes head coach Mark Watson said. "Steven Lenhart had a great chance; the game was wide open at the start. We finished our chance and then defended very well.
"We’ve worked hard on the defensive side of things and to pick up another clean sheet is very encouraging. We beat a very good team tonight.”
“Our attitude was great tonight," said Chavez. "We knew that we needed to win, but it was great for the team’s confidence to get a big win.
"You could see the extra effort by all 11 players on the field tonight," Chavez added. "We want to finish this tournament strong and hopefully tonight can spring some goals scored for our remaining matches in the MLS regular season.”
The victory keeps San Jose's hopes of winning the three-team group alive, but the Earthquakes will need some help. They will need Montreal to defeat Heredia next week, then beat Heredia at Buck Shaw Stadium on Oct. 23rd to advance the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals.
