LA Galaxy 1-2 Monterrey: Rayados take commanding first leg lead in CONCACAF Champions League semifinal

Two goals in the final 10 minutes gave Monterrey a 2-1 lead in the CCL semi in front of 21,745 fans, a record in the competition for the Home Depot Center.
Monterrey staked a commanding 2-1 win over the LA Galaxy on Wednesday in the CONCACAF Champions League semifinal first leg. The return leg heads back to Mexico next week.

"These are clear lessons for our team: the kind of concentration you need, the experience and tactical understanding," Bruce Arena said. "So what if we don't get the second goal? You win the game 1-0. That's so obvious. We didn't do the job we needed to do."

The tie started well for the MLS side. Jose Villarreal pulled the ball back in the box in the 28th minute. Robbie Keane hung a cross toward the far post, where Mike Magee nodded it back into danger. A.J. DeLaGarza, who had started the move with a quick throw-in, scuffed it over the line.

In the 63rd minute, Landon Donovan replaced Jose Villarreal for his first minutes at home since returning from an extended hiatus through March.

Donovan quickly flashed a shot wide. Then, a few minutes later, Galaxy took another quick throw, which Magee gathered and centered. Goalkeeper Juan de Dios Ibarra rushed out to smother Keane's shot.

Monterrey made the Galaxy pay for their wastefulness soon after. Cesar Delgado spun Michael Stephens around on the flank and crossed into the box. "I think Mikey Stephens was out there playing left back," Omar Gonzalez said. "He got cut up a little bit." Carlo Cudicini kept out Aldo de Nigris' initial header, and Humberto Suazo swept home the rebound.

In stoppage time, the Rayados scored again to take firm control of the tie. Jose Maria Basanta chipped a ball over the back line. Substitute Guillermo Madrigal headed it on. De Nigris took one touch on his thigh to cushion the pass and another to guide it inside the far post.

"Tonight we played an 80 minute game and soccer's 90 minutes," Todd Dunivant said. "They punished us at the end."
