A week after a valiant comeback at home against Toluca, Columbus fought from yet another deficit against the Mexican club.
Instead, Columbus gave away the game with a bit of a goalkeeping mistake.
Antonio Naelson "Zinha" converted a free kick in the 71st minute when William Hesmer stood flat-footed as Zinha's shot sailed into the goal as Toluca beat Columbus 3-2 in their CONCACAF Champions League match.
Toluca won the series with a 5-4 aggregate and move on to the semifinals while Columbus bowed out.
Columbus got on the scoreboard first when the Crew were awarded a penalty kick. In the 45th minute, Edgar Dueñas handled a ball inside the box and Columbus received a spot kick. Barros Schelotto stepped to the spot and buried his attempt past Alfredo Talavera.
The Crew gave Toluca a spot kick right back, though. In the first minute of the second half, Eddie Gaven fouled Antonio Naelson "Zinha" inside the box. The ball went to Raul Nava who buried the ball into the back of the net but the official ahd already given a spot kick. No worse for the wear, Toluca's Hector Raul Mancilla converted the penalty kick and leveled terms.
In the 56th minute, Brian Carroll tripped up Zinha from behind, about two yards outside of the box. Carroll picked up a yellow card for the foul, but worse than that he set up Toluca for a free kick opportunity. Zinha took the kick and sent it into the top corner. William Hesmer dived but could only follow it on its way into the goal as the ball had too much on it for Hemser to stop. The shot hit the underside of the crossbar and went over the goal line.
In the 70th minute, Columbus equalized on a splendid sequence. Danny O'Rourke carried the ball down the left side of the field and crossed the ball to the far post. Steven Lenhart got the cross near the right post and his shot hit the woodwork and bounced to the front of the goal. Barros Schelotto was there to clean up the mess and ripped the ball into an empty net.
Zinha, however, took away the Crew's momentum with the help of Hesmer. Zinha again had a free kick just outside of the area. He sent his shot towards the right post but Hesmer froze and watched the ball go into the net.
