After W Connection's win over Real España on Wednesday, Comunicaciones were faced with a tough scenario - beat a Mexican team or face elimination.

Comunicaciones were up for the challenge, however, as the club scored twice in the first half hour and held on for a 2-1 win.

The victory puts Comunicaciones into the quarterfinals and ousted W Connection from the tournament.

Pumas, meanwhile, still finished atop the group with 13 points.

Just five minutes into the encounter, Comunicaciones struck with a bit of fortune going their way. After a Comunicaciones throw-in, Pumas' Jose Garcia hit a weak clearance attempt from inside the penalty area. The ball bounced towards the top of the box and Freddy Thompson ran onto it. He ripped a shot that bounced off Pumas' Humberto Gonzalez and into the back of the net.

In the 24th minute, Comunicaciones did well to put away a goal on their own. Transito Montepeque buried a breakaway with a potent right-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area. Montepeque recevied the ball after a horrendous effort by Pumas' Diego Eduardo de Buen, whose clearance attempt went horribly wayward.

Pumas tried to get back in the game in the 37th minute when Gonzalez atoned for his earlier mistake as he finished off a pass from Oscar Ricardo Rojas from inside the box.

Pumas, though, could never get closer and the Guatemalans advanced to the quarterfinal round.
