D.C. United Notch First Three Points In CCL
D.C. United earn first three points in an important away game against Jabloteh in Trinidad & Tobago.
D.C. United won an important fixture in Trinidad, winning 1-0 over Jabloteh in the CONCACAF Champions League. The visiting team got ahead in the 14th minute after Jabloteh conceded a penalty. The hosts had clear possession through out the game, but D.C. were able to hold them off for the win.
D.C. United’s win moves them to third place in group B, while Jabloteh have to settle for last after three straight losses.
First Half
Both teams were looking for their first points in the competition, which set the stage for an exciting matchup.
D.C. United had the first real chance of the game courtesy of Andrew Jacobson. The clock had just hit the fifth minute mark when Jacobsen tried to surprise goalkeeper Cleon John with a low driven shot. The shot had very little on it and John made an easy save.
Jabloteh tried to respond back just two minutes after off a 25 yard free kick. Elton John tried his luck at goal instead of crossing it; his shot went well over the crossbar.
The team from Trinidad & Tobago seemed to have most of the possession early on but also wasted their chances with long ball efforts. Jabloteh had the game in their control but lost it on an error.
D.C. United were awarded a penalty in the 14th minute. Noel Williams was sanctioned with a handball inside the box; Christian Gomez took the shot and nailed it for United. D.C. were enjoying a 1-0 early in the half.
Jabloteh had a chance at evening things out in the 25th minute, but they wasted it when Jason Marcano had two great opportunities inside the box for Jabloteh. Marcano shot from point blank but was stopped twice by D.C. 'keeper Milos Kocic. The ball was finally knocked away by Clyde Simms and United were safe for the time being.
The home team tried hard to get into the tie, but luck just wasn’t on their side.
Marcano again had a chance to tie things up, this rime in the 43rd minute. Kocic was caught off line and Marcano had a go. His effort was cleared of the line by Julius James. The home team played well but it was D.C. which had the lead at the half.
Second Half
The pace of the game slowed for the second half as Jabloteh tried to equalize and United tried to protect their lead. The Major League Soccer club had seemed more comfortable with the ball now but Jabloteh would still have the first dangerous play.
Jabloteh had yet another great chance, this time coming from Lester Peltier in the 61st minute. Peltier was played in nicely inside the box. The Trinidad midfielder could not capitalize as his shot was skied high and wide.
Luciano Emilio almost had the goal that would make up for his struggling night.
D.C. United’s Brazilian star tried his luck from 30 yards out in the 64th minute. The ball sailed just wide of the right post. It was a great effort from the Brazilian as he tried to extend his team’s lead.
Jabloteh had their chance at scoring from a rare play in the 74th minute.
Jabloteh were awarded a free kick inside of D.C. United’s box. Kocic was called for violating the goalkeepers six second rule and a rare opportunity was given to the home team. Noel Williams wanted to make up for his first half mistake and he took a shot. The effort was not a good one as it went well over the crossbar.
Jabloteh keeper Cleon John had a great save for his team in the 76th minute. Devon McTavish found Christian Gomez inside the box. Gomez connected with a header but his effort was knocked away by John.
The home team had one last chance to save at least a point in the 87th minute.
United defender Julius James had a poor giveaway inside his own half. Peltier took the ball down field but James kept up with the midfielder only to concede a corner.
D.C. United were able to fend off the home team in the end, which earned them a 1-0 win.
