Columbus learned quickly just how tough Mexican teams can be at home. The Crew yielded an early goal and the hosts did not let up as Cruz Azul routed the reigning MLS champions by a 5-0 score.

Cruz Azul took command of the group with the victory while Columbus suffered their worst loss of the year in all competitions.

First Half

It took Cruz Azul all of three minutes to prove their worth against Columbus, who have lost just three games in league play this year. From outside the penalty area, Emmanuel Villa slipped a ball inside the box to Ramon Nuñez, who dribbled towards the end line. Nuñez knocked a ball to the front of the goal and Jaime Lozano slid and buried his shot past Crew 'keeper William Hesmer.

Nuñez scored a splended goal later in the half. From 27 yards out, Nuñez whipped a shot on goal that beat Hesmer and landed in the back of the net.

In the 38th minute, the task of escaping with a result became far more difficult as defender Eric Brunner was sent off after picking up two quick yellow cards. First, Brunner fouled Emmanuel Villa and was booked, then he was shown a second yellow after a foul on Rogelio Chavez.

Columbus nearly scored at the end of the first half when Alejandro Moreno fed Brian Carroll, who walked in on goal alone. However, Yosgart Gutierrez charged off his line and made the save.

Second Half

Columbus dug their own grave early in the second half. Alejandro Vela swung a ball to the front of the goal and Chad Marshall tried to clear the ball but instead knocked it over Hesmer and into the back of the net.

Cruz Azul put the finishing touches in the final 10 minutes. First, Villa appeared to have fallen inside the box with minimal contact but Cruz Azul were awarded a penalty kick. Lozano converted the spot kick to give Cruz Azul a 4-0 lead. Then, Marshall again showed horrific defending. He tried to clear a cross but instead sent it right to Lozano. Then, as he scrambled to try and recover, Lozano's shot deflected off Marshall and into the back of the net.

Cruz Azul took control of Group C with the win and now have beaten Columbus and Saprissa by a combined 7-0.
