Jamaica Beat El Salvador, Claim Third Place In Group A
Colorado forward Omar Cummings accounted for the only goal of the game as Jamaica eliminated El Salvador.
Jamaica broke a deadlock late in Friday's game against El Salvador and held on to win the final Gold Cup Group A match by 1-0.
The victory was Jamaica's first but also put the Reggae Boyz in third place of the group. Jamaica still have hope but must await results from Saturday or Sunday in order to learn their fate.
Jamaica's win over El Salvador gave the Caribbean side third place as the first tiebreaker is head-to-head. What started as a promising Gold Cup run with a dramatic late victory over Costa Rica is now done as El Salvador failed to earn one more point in their two other group games.
Neither side did much in the first half as El Salvador were seemingly taking it easy and hoping for a draw to ensure passage to the second round. Jamaica slowly started to build an attack though
It was not until the second half that Jamaica broke through. Luton Shelton whipped a cross in from the left side of the penalty area to the front of the box. With El Salvador defender Marvin Rene Gonzalez draped on him, Colorado Rapids striker Omar Cummings re-directed the ball on goal.
El Salvador played with a sense of urgency late in the game and tried desperately to notch the equalizer. Their best chance came deep in stoppage time when the Cuscatlecos won a free kick some 20 yards out. Goalkeeper Miguel Angel Montes took the free kick and banged his attempt off the left post.
Time ran out on El Salvador and the seemingly upstart Central American side was ousted.
Jamaica, meanwhile, could get through as one of the better two third-place teams should Nicaragua and Panama draw. Also, goal differential between Honduras, Haiti or Grenada, whoever finishes third in Group B, could come into play.
