WPS Previews: Week Eight - Part One

This week of Women’s Professional Soccer is starting out a bit earlier. The Los Angeles Sol will kick things off hosting Sky Blue FC in the first ever Friday WPS game, May 15th at 10:30 p.m. ET.

Los Angeles Sol vs. Sky Blue FC, Home Depot Center, Carson, Calif. Friday May 15 at 10:30 p.m. ET

The Los Angeles Sol is still the hottest team in WPS. Friday they’ll play Sky Blue FC, who is fresh off their first win of the season – 2-0 over the Chicago Red Stars. The Sol (3-1-2) earned a 0-0 draw vs. the Boston Breakers last weekend. The two clubs met in week two of WPS action, with Los Angeles handing Sky Blue FC a 2-0 loss.

Los Angeles, while holding on to the top WPS spot by a mere point, is still a solid team from front to back. The Sol boast both one of the top goalkeepers and goal-scorers in the league. Karina LeBlanc has posted 25 saves, while allowing two goals and posting five shutouts. And their scoring is just beginning. Marta leads the attack with three goals, but she's not the only one ready to score. Aya Miyami is hungry to tally a goal, with 14 shots. It should only be a matter of time before she finds the net.

Sky Blue FC (1-2-2) entered new territory last weekend when the club tallied its first win. Now they have to build upon their success. Sarah Walsh and Natasha Kai tallied goals last week to lead the visitors to a 2-0 win over Chicago. The duo will be back for another week of action against Los Angeles. But they’re not the only ones to look out for. Collette McCallum and Heather O’Reilly are right there with Kai in offensive pressure. McCallum has an assist, while O’Reilly has a goal. Sky Blue FC has just three goals on the year. Every game is a learning experience for them. Karen Barsley and Jenni Branam have been strong in goal, allowing just four goals.

It’s a long season. But these two clubs are both looking for a goal or two on Friday night.
