Van Persie breaks Kluivert's Netherlands goal record

A hat trick against Hungary in the Netherlands' penultimate World Cup qualification match allowed him to overtake Patrick Kluivert as the nation's top scorer of all time.
Robin van Persie has become the top goalscorer of all time for Netherlands following a hat trick against Hungary on Friday.

The Manchester United striker went into the penultimate World Cup 2014 qualifier with 38 goals in 78 games for the Oranje, and the pressure was off for the hosts, who had secured a spot in Brazil next summer in September.

Van Persie scored after 16 minutes to prove that the Dutch were not resting on their laurels with a looped header to open the scoring, before Kevin Strootman and Jeremain Lens added to the lead.

The Oranje skipper drew level with Patrick Kluivert's 40-goal tally on the stroke of halftime with another header and he celebrated by hugging Kluivert, who is one of Louis van Gaal's assistant coaches in the international set-up.

Van Persie broke the mark in the 53rd minute off a feed from Arjen Robben -- who set up van Persie's second goal as well -- before being subbed off for Dirk Kuyt in the 61st minute with the Dutch leading comfortably 5-1. Netherlands went on to complete an 8-1 victory.
