Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will return to England on Wednesday after failing to recover from a knee injury while on international duty.
The 24-year-old met up with the Argentina squad on Monday, but Alejandro Sabella’s medical staff deemed it unwise to risk him in the upcoming World Cup qualifying doubleheader against Venezuela and Bolivia.
Ezequiel Lavezzi is expected to replace Aguero in the Argentina starting lineup, alongside Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain.
Aguero has not featured for City since a 2-0 win over Chelsea on Feb. 24, with Carlos Tevez and Dzeko leading the line for the champions in his absence as Manchester United has opened up a 15-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
A 2-1 win over Chile in its last qualifier leaves Argentina three points clear of the qualifying group.
