Ancelotti gives Beckham ribbing for not scoring in PSG home farewell

The Italian coach joked after the game about the midfielder's failure to score in his final PSG home game and admitted he is unlikely to play against Lorient next weekend.

Carlo Ancelotti commended David Beckham's career following the retiring midfielder's tearful exit in his final Paris Saint-Germain home game and jested that the ex-England man "didn't have my quality" after not scoring in his Parc des Princes farewell.

The former Manchester United, Real Madrid and LA Galaxy star was given the captain's armband from the start of his side's 3-1 win on Saturday over Brest and broke down in tears upon his substitution in what looks set to be his final appearance in professional football.

At the conclusion of the match his teammates hoisted the Englishman on to their shoulders and celebrated his exit in style, though Ancelotti had a pretend bone to pick with Beckham over his lack of goals in his bow out.

"I spoke with David and told him in my last game I scored two goals. I said to him: 'Maybe tonight you'll score two goals' - but maybe he didn't have my quality!" Ancelotti joked.

The Italian also lauded Beckham's glittering career and suggested that nights such as Saturday's will linger long in the 38-year-old's memory.

"He will miss the world of football, because he showed a good image every time, really professional. It was a fantastic evening for him," Ancelotti added. "He will have a very good memory of this night. When you finish, when you stop, you have memories of all the years."

Table-topping PSG has one more game left this season - away to Lorient, which plays on a turf surface - but Ancelotti doubts that Beckham will feature, though insists he is likely to come to the game next Sunday with the Ligue 1-winning squad.

"We have to decide, but I don't think he will play. He will come with the team but I don't think he will play … a plastic pitch is difficult for a 38-year-old," Ancelotti said.
