Bryce Alderson Blog: On taxes and broken boots

In his latest entry for, the 18-year-old Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder speaks on the issue of being taxed unexpectedly, and why his teammates poke fun at his footwear.
I learned an important lesson about taxes last week.

When I signed my pro deal, it included a bonus. It took a while to get it pushed through the league, so I only got it recently.

When it was deposited, I noticed that it was significantly less than I expected. I called my agent to ask him what was up and he informed me that taxes had been taken off. I don't know why, but I thought that since it was a bonus that it would be tax-free. It definitely wasn't, so that was one of the most disappointing things I've ever seen!

When I first saw it, I thought there was a mistake. And then when I realized what I was due to receive after tax, I felt duped.

Lesson learned, I guess.

On to other things, I had a bit of a shoe problem a few days ago.

I prefer a certain model, and so I have boots that I've been wearing for the longest time. I hate breaking in new boots so I've been wearing them down and waiting for the new model to come out.

Finally it did, but I got the wrong shipment, so I had to break in another pair. Those ripped within the first hour of wearing them, so I was kind of bootless, which is obviously not good for a soccer player.

I had to scramble around and try to find a store that had super glue, or an industrial strength glue or something, so I could fix the broken boots. I tried to glue them together myself, but that didn't work. Luckily, I found a shoe tailor who was able to fix them up at least temporarily, so I'm hoping those will hold on until my next pair comes, but we'll see.

What I haven't mentioned about my boots is that they are a women's model. When I got the current ones, they didn't have any white men's models, which is what I prefer, but they had the whites in the women's size, so I've been wearing women's boots for the past month or two.

A bunch of the players mentioned that they couldn't get the white versions of my boots and asked where I got mine. They found out that I had women's boots and since then they've taken to giving me constant grief for that.

I can't get my new boots fast enough!
