The Manchester City left back has told Goal that former teammate Thierry Henry has hyped up playing in the North American league and hopes to be a part of NYCFC in the futureManchester City left back Gael Clichy admits that he's open to a future MLS move after hearing positive reviews from his friend and New York Red Bulls star Thierry Henry.
The two are former teammates, having played together at Arsenal for five years and on the French national team. Reflecting on Henry's decision to join MLS back in 2010, Clichy hinted that he would like to share the experience in the North American league.
"He says he loves New York and says MLS is getting bigger each year," Clichy told Goal. "It makes you think that if the opportunity comes, why not try MLS?
"We all want to play as long as possible and the chance to be a part of a new league that is growing bigger and bigger year after year, that’s a great challenge. The way he’s talking about it means that he loves it. It makes me want to try it if the possibility comes."
Clichy, however, has no immediate plans to leave European soccer.
"Nothing is sure, but why not?" the 28-year-old said. "If the opportunity comes for any player to play in the U.S., of course I’d take it. It’s a nice thing and you can see big players going there and enjoying it because the football is getting better each year."
Manchester City recently invested in an MLS franchise, New York City FC, and the club starts playing in 2015. Clichy and his Man City teammates were in New York during the team's announcement and he stated that he saw firsthand the high-level anticipation surrounding the club.
"Yeah, that’s the first time in history that a Premier League club is opening a team in MLS and even more, it’s in New York," Clichy said. "Hopefully the chance will come later on to be able to be a part of this. It would be a crazy thing and we can tell people are really up for it and excited about another team in New York City in MLS.
