The fire broke out at a building located just in front of the arena, where England will meet Italy in Sunday's quarterfinal, and forced local residents to flee their homeGDANSK, Poland - Over 50 firefighters and 15 fire engines were required to battle a blaze close to Kiev's Olympic Stadium on Thursday evening.
The fire broke out at a building some 200 meters from the entrance to the venue of Sunday's Euro 2012 quarterfinal clash between England and Italy, and it took two hours for the emergency services to bring the situation under control.
There was never any chance of the blaze spreading but some local residents were forced to flee their homes, while the requisite use of water cannons resulted in glass and bits of roofing cascading onto the canopies of several restaurants immediately below.
The area surrounding the building has been sealed off for an indefinite period as the cause of the fire has not yet been established.
England and Italy will collide at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday at 2:45 p.m. ET.
