The holding midfielder has praised the cohesion within the Seleccao squad, having put their impressive start to Euro 2012 down to the side forming a strong unit at the backMiguel Veloso has revealed that Portugal's defensive solidity has been "the secret" behind their success at Euro 2012 so far.
"I think the secret of our success is knowing how to defend, knowing how to handle the pressure, and the humility we showed on the pitch, and our unity," Veloso told UEFA.com.
"Not just the midfield but all the parts of the team, from the defense and the goalkeeper to the forwards. Because we were united, once again we managed to play a great game, to achieve a win, which was important."
The Seleccao lost their opening match of the tournament to Germany, but bounced back with wins over Denmark and Netherlands to book their ticket for the quarter-finals of the competition.
Now, Veloso, who started all three of Portugal's games in Group B, believes the key to its progression in Poland and Ukraine has been its ability to develop into a cohesive unit.
"The important thing is that once again we demonstrated the cohesion within this group. We played a great game," Veloso said. "Once again I'll repeat that it's not easy being behind and then turning around the game against a team as strong as the Netherlands."
Portugal will do battle with Czech Republic in the quarterfinals of Euro 2012.
