The latest incident at Arena Amazonia saw a 55-year-old man die shortly after being admitted into an intensive care unit.World Cup 2014 stadium safety has taken a blow as another worker has died from injuries related to the building of Arena Amazonia.
A 55-year-old man, named in media reports as Antonio Jose Pita Martins, was photographed being rushed to a hospital Friday and died shortly after being admitted into its intensive care unit.
The project management company in charge of the stadium in Manaus, UGP Copa, confirmed a worker had been injured, and his death was verified shortly afterward by the Amazonas state health department.
The state's health secretary, Wilson Alecrim, said that Martins had bruised his right shoulder, was suffering respiratory issues and had severe head trauma.
Friday's accident is the latest in a number of fatalities at stadiums being built for the World Cup. Most notably, two people died in November when a crane collapsed in Sao Paulo, destroying a section of the recently built stadium.
