The England international has admitted he never thought he would achieve such a feat, and spoke highly of the whole team's performance against Aston Villa on Tuesday.Jermain Defoe says it is "a dream" to be among Tottenham's top-five all-time goal scorers.
The 30-year-old hit a double on Tuesday in Spurs' 4-0 thumping of Aston Villa in the Capital One Cup to move ahead of George Hunt on the club's scoring charts on 139 goals.
"If someone would have said to me when I first walked into Spurs that I’d be in the top-five all-time goal scorers in the club’s history, I would have probably said 'are you being serious?'" Defoe told the club's official website. "I look at all the great players in the top 10 and to be fifth, it’s a dream.
"I’m trying not to think about it too much as it’s a long season, but of course it’s at the back of my mind every time I go on the pitch because I want to score. It’s something special and I want to keep it going."
Defoe, who was joined by Paulinho and Nacer Chadli - with his first for the club - on the score sheet, emphasized the comprehensiveness of the victory and praised the efforts of the squad in their third game in six days.
"It was a great performance, good energy, we kept the ball well and that’s something we’ve done in the last few games," he continued. "We kept another clean sheet as well, that’s important. When the lads at the back and the goalkeeper are all doing their jobs, it’s up to the forwards to get the goals to win us the games."
